Yes, sadly it’s true.  After 40 years of serving the fibre arts community Gemini Fibres will be closing.  Exact date to be determined but expect it to be by the end of May.

ALL INVENTORY MUST BE SOLD (including store fixtures).  We still have a considerable inventory of a variety of products, books, yarns, small looms & spinning wheels, etc. and we can still special order items in as required (50% deposit required when ordering).  We have been working on our new website to keep it up to date with products we have sold out of and/or which items are in stock or “special order”.  Orders must be shipped or picked up immediately.  Shipping & tax is extra and will not be discounted.  All sales are final.  Please contact us if you have any questions or need assistance.  If you already have items on backorder or special order, they will be fulfilled as soon as available but will not be eligible for extra discount.

HISTORY:  Gemini Fibres began in 1979 by Lois Pottage who had a vision and need to obtain products & supplies (which at that time, were hard to come by & needed to be imported) to pursue her (& her friends) passion in a variety of fibre-related interests.  This blossomed and grew and eventually she began supplying other retailers with products, books & magazines.  After Lois passed away in 2004 my father (Aubrey Pottage), my-self (Cheryl, their daughter) and Tanis (their daughter-in-law) assumed the responsibility of continuing the business.  It has been a journey and an experience which we have totally enjoyed.  In October 2018 Aubrey passed away.  This event has precipitated our decision to close the business and retire to explore other adventures.

It has been our pleasure to have been able to encourage and facilitate your endeavours in spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, knitting & crochet by supplying products & equipment and through our in-house workshops and meeting you at the many events we’ve attended over the years.

We hope that you will continue to pursue your interest in your chosen fibre arts field.  There are many great suppliers of all the wonderful products we’ve had the pleasure of representing.  If we can be of assistance in connecting you, please let us know.

We hope to see or speak with you soon.

Cheryl & Tanis

Comment on the Woolcombs by Roger Hawkins

“Hi Roger,

Just a note to let you know how much I’ve used and enjoyed your combs this year. (And I always thought my Louets were the greatest. Guess it was a blessing in disguise that I lost them). You’ve got a super product, beautifully made, and far superior to manufactured “things” punched out one right after the other out of cheap goods meant to last no time at all. Thanks to you, I have an heirloom just like the workhorses of yore.

Just had to write to tell you my spindles just arrived! OH MY GOODNESS. They are such beautiful things. Now I understand how people become captivated by them. Thanks for the great service and the time spent on the phone helping me choose which spindles to buy right now. As soon as I saw them I thought I must have a Dervish!! The yarn sett gauge is lovely as well. I’m gushing I know but I have no exposure to such lovely spinning things here on the island. I would think I’d died and gone to heaven if I were to step foot inside your shop. Now off to do some spinning.

I didn’t get the name—a failure on my part—of the lovely woman who answered my call last week and who took my order for a Tom Forrester spindle. I asked for a Linum Fancy spindle and she suggested the pink ivory one, and another. I chose the pink ivory one, sight unseen. It arrived promptly. I just want to tell her how very extraordinarily pleased I am with the spindle. It is not only lovely, as she said, but it spins like a spinner’s dream.

From another source, I had just recently purchased my first Forrester spindle, a Granny Fancy with an imbuya whorl and rock maple shaft. With that spindle I was an instant fan of Tom Forrester’s work. All I had to go on regarding the Linum was the black & white Gemini ad in Spin Off magazine. I need not have any worries. The spindle choice was perfect. Thanks so much.

I have been a spinner/weaver/knitter for 30 years. I live on my family farm in the SW corner of Kansas, USA, where four generations of us have lived and grown up. I have always had to supply my fiber arts passion via mail order as the nearest fiber shop is 400 or more miles away and no one here has the foggiest idea about what it is that I do.

So, thanks, again. The next time I decide that I can’t live without another Tom Forrester spindle, I will give Gemini Fibers another call.
