Gnome  Needle Felted Gnome with Jane Altobelli

Needlefelt a jolly little gnome, with a pointy hat, twinkling blue eyes and snowy white beard. This is one of our most popular classes.  Every gnome is different. Some students call them “Santas” because the outfit is red and white but they can be done in any colour. This class teaches you how to gradually build up the form and ensure the gnome is stable and won’t tip over. The face is almost the last step and when the beard and trimming are added, the gnome comes to life.

About our Instructors

Roslyn Darling has been a handspinner and yarn designer for many years. She is continually adding more spindles, wheels and fibres to her collection. She particularly enjoys the contrast between spinning bulky wool yarns for rug hooking floor mats on one day, and then spinning fine silk, cotton and linen threads for knitting, crocheting and weaving on the next day.  She finds blending colours and fibres to be an endless source of pleasure. She is a member of the Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers, and has recently completed the six-year OHS Handspinning Certificate Program. Roslyn enjoys demonstrating and teaching spinning to all ages in many different venues.

Jane Altobelli is a Fibre Artist who has explored many forms of artistic media including sewing, knitting, spinning, dyeing, wet felting and needle-felting.  Along the road of her creative journey, she has also visited quilting, kumihimo, weaving, beading, silk painting, teddy bear making and embroidery.  As a result, Jane has discovered that nothing she has learned is ever wasted, but gets incorporated some time, somewhere and somehow into her work.  There is evidence of this in her wearable art, such as felted hats and vests, as well as in her needle-felted figures and many other very unique pieces. Jane was a member of Artisans’ Attic, a cooperative shop in Georgetown, where she still sells her one-of-a-kind creations and takes on special commissions for clients.  Jane has taught felting and needle-felting for the past few years to various groups.  Jane is a member of the Georgetown Rug Hookers, Ontario Hooking Craft Guild, the Feltmaker’s List and Dyehappy (internet lists).

Michelle Kortinen Living in Finland for a few years exposed me to wonderful textile design, but I was especially intrigued by the most humble Scandinavian-style rag rug. The desire to make one inspired me to purchase a counter-balance floor loom upon my return to Canada in 2008 and so my weaving began! I have been an active member of weaving studios, guilds and workshops, and have successfully completed the first level of the Master Weaver program through the Guild of Canadian Weavers. In 2014, I decided to devote more time to weaving and my hobby “bloomed” into a small business, I currently teach weaving for beginners for the Town of Richmond Hill and the City of Toronto.
